Cookie policy
The complete list of cookies this site sets (it's one), what the banner buttons do, and how to change your mind.
Cookies in a few lines
A cookie is a small text file that a website stores in your browser and reads back on later visits. Some are needed for a site to work; others track what you read, often on behalf of advertisers.
SoftwarePivot sets a single cookie, and only after you click a button on our cookie banner. It records your choice and nothing else. We don't use advertising cookies, we don't use third-party cookies, and nothing on our pages is loaded from another company's servers. We don't use local storage or similar browser storage for tracking either.
The cookies we set
| Name | Set by | Type | What it does | Lasts |
|---|---|---|---|---|
consent |
softwarepivot.com (first party) | Strictly necessary | Stores accepted or rejected, so the banner doesn't ask again on every page |
180 days |
Strictly necessary cookies don't require consent under EU and Italian rules, which is why this one is set even when you click "Reject": without it, we couldn't remember that you said no. It contains no identifier, and it's never sent to anyone but our own server.
If you never click a banner button, no cookie is set at all.
What "Accept" and "Reject" do
Our banner says that, with your permission, we would like to measure which guides get read. That is an intention, not something running today: no analytics or measurement tool is installed on this site yet, so at the moment clicking "Accept" and clicking "Reject" have exactly the same effect. Both store your choice in the consent cookie, and nothing else happens.
The banner also has a close button (×) in its top corner. Closing it this way has exactly the same effect as clicking "Reject": only strictly necessary cookies are set, and your choice is stored as rejected. Closing the banner is never treated as acceptance.
If we add an audience-measurement tool, it will only run for readers who have accepted. Before it goes live we will add it to the table above, with its name, the cookies it sets, how long they last and who receives the data, update the privacy policy, and show the banner again so everyone can make a fresh choice. "Reject" will always be as easy to click as "Accept", and rejecting will never stop you from reading anything on the site.
Change your choice
You can change your mind whenever you like. The button below deletes the consent cookie on this browser and brings the banner back so you can choose again.
Your choice is stored per browser and per device, so if you read SoftwarePivot on a phone and a laptop you'll be asked on each.
Controlling cookies in your browser
Every major browser lets you see, block and delete cookies, either for all sites or for one. Deleting the cookies for softwarepivot.com has the same effect as the button above. The help pages for Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Edge explain how.
Blocking all cookies won't stop the site from working. You'll simply see the banner on each visit, because we won't be able to remember your answer.
Cookies on other websites
Links to software vendors, including affiliate links, take you to other websites. Once you're there, their own cookie policies apply, and the vendor or an affiliate network may set cookies to record that you arrived from SoftwarePivot. We have no control over those cookies. The affiliate disclosure explains how those links work, and the vendor's own cookie banner is where you can accept or refuse them.
